Golf

The Levin Golf Club is situated among dunes between Hōkio Beach and Lake Horowhenua and enjoys views of the Tararua Ranges and the local countryside. The club is an easy 10-minute drive from Levin and the 18-hole 6121m course, which has been in play since the 1950s, promises golfers a good day out. Gently undulating terrain means it's an easy walk, but with challenges and interest aplenty. Mature, treelined fairways are a predominant feature. The fourth hole provides an early test. It's a par 5 with a double dogleg and players must navigate two fairway bunkers on their way to the small green. The signature hole, also a par 5, is the 10th. It features a 2-tier green guarded at its front edge by 2 bunkers. As if to prove there's no let-up, the par 4 18th features 6 bunkers — that's right, 6 — flanking the large green and no doubt ensuring a memorable finish to a round. Golfers are welcome to enjoy the club's facilities, which include a practice fairway, driving nets and putting green as well as a well-stocked golf shop, locker rooms and bar and cafeteria. An outdoor deck provides the ideal spot to relax and enjoy a beverage and a snack post-round. Campervan golfers are welcome. Sites, some with power, some without, are available ($15 approximately per night). Green fees: $30 (NZ affiliated), $40 (nonaffiliated). 160 Moutere Road, Levin. (06) 368 6189, levingolfclub.co.nz
