WINERIES TO VISIT: CRAGGY RANGE

With giant Te Mata Peak in one direction, the magical Tukituki River and Craggy Range in the other, Craggy Range Winery is like a fairy tale — except in this story, Cinderella also drinks outstanding wine. The winery has a vineyard in the Gimblett area as well as another, Kidnappers, in Te Awanga, and a visit to the cellar is a great way to sample several top local drops. The Quarry cabernet won a best in show medal at the 2019 Decanter World Wine Awards. The restaurant was the winner of two hats at the 2018 Cuisine Good Food Guide Awards.

BLACK BARN: There's always something on at Black Barn. In winter, it's the home of the Walk of Wonders light festival, in summer there are movie nights at the amphitheatre, and on Saturdays in the warmer months, it is home to a boutique growers' market (not to be mistaken with the Farmers' Market at the showgrounds). Head chef Jason Brown creates dishes that celebrate Hawke's Bay produce. Try a chardonnay, or two. Black Barn Road, Havelock North. (06) 877 7985, blackbarn.com
