Since opening in 1999, Hawthorne Coffee has picked up more medals at the annual New Zealand Coffee Awards than any other roastery. Its coffee is served in restaurants and bars around the region, and the roastery’s espresso bar has been named best local café multiple times. Owners Tom and Benita Ormond liken coffee-roasting to winemaking. “We’re taking the best possible ingredients and striving to extract maximum flavour from every bean,” says Benita. “When the coffee beans are being roasted, half of Havelock North is enveloped in a thick, toasty aroma.
