MOOMAA café and design store

Prepare to stop when the large “café” sign painted on MOOMAA's roof comes into view. The café and design store right on SH1 are owned and run by Emma Shannon, a graphic and interior designer, who made the place her own in 2018. She doesn't have far to come to work as she and husband George now own the farm upon which the café sits. Emma had always dreamed of running a café with a design shop alongside. “It made sense to create a business next to the farm, especially so I can mix in my two small children, who just love coming down here.” One end of the café is given over to gifts and interior design, but there's still plenty of room for diners. The gifts are high-quality and mostly New Zealand-designed, including Emma's friend's very classy Honest Wolf wool bags. “It's almost like having my design office in the café. And it's nice to have somewhere people can browse while they wait for their food or coffee,” says Emma.

The lamb burger is a solid MOOMAA favourite, as are the turkish eggs. Whatever the order, throw in a side of the pork and fennel sausages — they're juicy and delicious. As for the café's name, Emma wanted something to reflect the farm that was still good for her design business and the café. “It's a combination of animal sounds, so it worked. And it's a good conversation starter.” 1813 SH1, Marton. (06) 327 7780, moomaa.nz
