Vinegar Hill Campground (PUtai Ngahere)

NZ Lifestyle Magazine Group

Potentially the nation's most famous DOC campground, Vinegar Hill is party-central for locals who rock up with seemingly everything but the kitchen sink. The 30ha reserve, with its 300-year-old tōtara tree and other natives, is also given over each New Year's to a massive LGBTQI party. Thus, it's possibly not a great choice for quiet camping. The ground is in a lovely spot right by the Rangitīkei River, with good fishing, safe swimming and three large flat areas to camp wherever looks good (and quiet). Decent toilets and cold showers are available, but no power or cellphone coverage. Take lots of bug spray. Adults $10, children $4 per night (cash only). 6km from Hunterville, turn off SH1 at SH54, then turn right just across the bridge.
