GOLF

NELSON GOLF CLUB The Nelson Golf Club was created as a links course in 1905, but an extensive treeplanting programme in the late 1950s saw it morph into a parkland course.

The decision to return the course to a links half a century later was the result of several factors. The trees, by now mature, required constant pruning and maintenance due to the proximity (next door) of the Nelson Airport with its resultant height restrictions. The expense was considerable. Also carrying weight was a groundswell of opinion that the course, on the coast, should be returned to its former links glory; New Zealand's most venerable golfer Sir Bob Charles among them. Work on culling more than 400 trees commenced in 2008, and the job took almost five years to complete. It was worth the wait; the 18-hole championship course is now regarded as one of the finest links in the country. Of note is the par-3 6th, the signature hole. Measuring 166m from the back tee, golfers must take care not to slice their tee shot into the Tasman Bay, which runs the length of the hole. Green fees: $45 (NZ affiliated), $60 (non-affiliated).
