MACKENZIE GOLF CLUB

A few kilometres south of Lake Tekapo is the Mackenzie Golf Club. The ninehole course, which opened in 1962, sits on Ministry of Defence land. The club leases the land, near flat terrain, meaning it's an easy walk for golfers. As club manager Mark Morgan points out, “If the golf is no good the views are marvelous.” There are trees between the unwatered fairways; the greens, however, are watered. Although relatively sheltered, the course is anything but benign should a nor'wester be blowing. “We have one hole that measures 506m, but in the wind, it plays more like 1006m,” says Morgan. Simple but awe-inspiring sums up this unashamedly country course. The club operates an online payment system or visitors can call into Tekapo's 4 Square supermarket to pay for their round.

Green fees: $15 (9 holes), $20 (18 holes). SH8, Lake Tekapo.
