HILMA AF KLINT: THE SECRET PAINTINGS
4 December to 27 March, City Gallery Wellington
More than 100 highly celebrated works by Swedish spiritualist artist Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) demonstrate the radical abstract practice of one of the most discussed artists in the modern world. During an era of creative restriction for women, af Klint produced the world’s first abstract paintings, pre-dating the celebrated abstractionists Kandinsky, Malevich and Mondrian. At her request, af Klint’s work has been kept out of the public eye until recently — when it has changed the course of art and art history. hilma.citygallery.org.nz
