Scrimshaw
To 26 June, Waikato Museum Te Whare Taonga o Waikato, Hamilton About 30 objects highlighting the little-known 19th-century art practice of scrimshaw — the engraving and colouring of eggshells, teeth and horns by sailors, whalers, soldiers and prisoners. Curated by the Waikato Museum, Scrimshaw includes an ostrich egg (pictured) from 1775 illustrating Dutch East India Company ships traversing the Cape of Good Hope, an array of bullock horns depicting tangata whenua and a range of colonial scenes from the 1860s. waikatomuseum.co.nz
