Stevei Houkāmau
18 June to 2 October, The Suter Art Gallery, Nelson
Kia whakatōmuri te haere whakamua. A solo exhibition of works by Wellington-based uku (clay) artist Stevei Houkāmau (Ngāti Porou, Te Whānau-a-Apanui, Scotland) examines metaphorical and literal connections between people, uku and Pāpātuanuku. Renowned for her distinctive carved surface designs drawn from the practice of body art markings, Houkāmau’s exhibition comprises 18 pieces, including amphora, vessel forms, a whakapapa chain, uhi — instruments used to create moko — and a moving image and soundscape. thesuter.org.nz
