When to get a vet

The signs of a sick animal can be subtle. It may be sitting down or staying in the shade more than its paddock mates, or it may separate itself from others in its flock or herd.

Check animals every day, so you know their ‘normal.' It makes it much easier to spot something abnormal – that's the time to call the vet for advice.

The longer you wait before seeking veterinary advice, the higher the cost and/or the worse the prognosis. It's also not acceptable to wait and hope it will be ok – an owner has a responsibility to ensure an animal isn't suffering.

RESOURCES

Call local vet clinics. Rural clinics, and those close to rural areas, will have specialist farm vets or will refer you to a clinic that does. Another option is to search the Veterinary Council register: www.vetcouncil.org.nz – click on the menu option ‘Find a Vet' and choose either ‘Find a Vet' or ‘Find a Practice.'
