Kaipara Missing Link

NZ Lifestyle Magazine Group

After resting on the banks of the Northern Wairoa River, or perhaps refueling with some kūmara chips, it's back onto the Kaipara Missing Link Trail. Some 118km separates Dargaville and Auckland, and the ride is a little more adventurous than most, with options for beach riding and a boat trip. From Dargaville, riders head out to the Poutō Peninsula and the small community of Poutō. This is a mix of sealed roads and gravel, so ride with care. It's a 2- to 3-hour hop, skip and a boat over to Parakai, near Helensville. Kaipara Cruises operates charters from Poutō to Parakai, giving riders a chance to relax and enjoy the harbour views. Book in advance, kaiparacruises.co.nz. From Parakai, the trail follows a mixture of back roads and main roads before heading towards the CBD. Riders can plan their journey into the city following the Auckland Transport website, at.govt.nz/cycling-walking For maps and comprehensive trail information, visit nzcycletrail.com
