SOMEWHERE SPECIAL TO EAT

If there's one thing the Kauri Coast lacks, it's evening meal options. Restaurants are few and far between, so it pays to plan if staying a few days in the region. Paparoa's Thirsty Tūī is a welcome relief. Part-traditionalcountry hotel, part-gastro pub, the Tūī's menu ranges from pizza to pork belly. While the flavours may be international, the ingredients are as local as possible, with watercress, kūmara from Rūāwai and a few locally caught fish. The 1950s-styled pub has indoor and outdoor seating, with a garden bar for warm summer nights. There's motorhome parking next door, and a few hotel rooms available. 2039 Paparoa Valley Road, Paparoa, (09) 431 7359. paparoahotel.nz
