Walking tracks

The Pīwakawaka Loop gets its name from the friendly fantails that fly close to walkers on this 1.3km track. The route departs from the Main Gates car park and passes gum trees and loops through one of the small redwood groves.

Estimated time: 40 minutes.

The Giant Circuit This 5.4km track is one of the peak's most challenging. The path circles the perimeter of the park before reaching the summit, and it's hard going the entire way. It's best to head counter-clockwise from the Main Gates car park towards the Big Redwoods. A path zigs its way up the hillside towards the summit. This path offers a good vantage point from which to view the giant's “bite”. Estimated time:

2 hours, 15 minutes.

The Karaka Wander is a 4km track that passes through 200-year-old karaka trees, a favourite of kererū, who enjoy the red berries. Estimated time: 1 hour, 15 minutes. The Rongokako Trail is a challenging 5.5km perimeter walk that covers the best of Te Mata, from redwoods to limestone caves and the extraordinary views from its summit. Estimated time: 2 hours, 15 minutes.
