Walks

Sometimes referred to as the “cardiac track”, this is where locals head to get the blood pumping. But every step, every puff, is worth it for the view from the top, which extends across Levin to the Tasman Sea, down to Kāpiti Island, and north to Mt Ruapehu. From the Denton Road car park it takes about 45 to 60 minutes to walk the 2km up a very well-maintained track to the top ridge trig. The trig walk is part of the Te Araroa trail. Mountain bikers can also use the course, and it connects to other bike tracks in the area. The forest is private land, so obey signage (including dogs on leashes) and treat the area with respect. 30 Denton Road, Levin. ADD ON SOME FLAT: For a bit more, add on the Queen Street Walkway.

Park anywhere down Queen Street and walk towards Denton Road, admiring the Tararua Ranges beyond. Perhaps detour into the Waiopehu Scenic Reserve, which is a quiet picnic spot with easy walks through native bush.
