RANGATIRA GOLF CLUB

When one thinks of New Zealand cable cars, it is Wellington's iconic red cable car that climbs the steep hill between Lambton Quay and Kelburn that generally comes to mind. However many Kiwi golfers are aware of another, this one painted a fetching hue of blue, which is to be found at the Rangatira Golf Club, 12km from Hunterville on SH1. The cable car ferries golfers from the 18th green, situated on the lowest of the course's 3 tiers, up to the clubhouse. Designed by Doug LengWard, the course opened in the mid-1960s. On the banks of the Rangitīkei River, it boasts incredible views of the cliffs that are such a feature of this part of the river. But it's not just the views that are dazzling; the course itself is exceptionally well maintained and, in 2015, Rangatira was awarded Hidden Gem status for the central region in the New Zealand Golf Course Regional Rankings. There are showers and changing facilities in the clubhouse, which is open seven days a week. Bar and catering services are available mid-week and weekends. Clubs, carts and trundlers are available for hire. Golfers traveling by campervan or with a caravan are welcome, an overnight stay costs $20. Green fees: $30 (18 holes). 4818 SH1, Hunterville.
