Salt and Pepper Café

The signage doesn't make it entirely obvious, but behind Bennik's Eggs, past the tempting gifts and through the sliding door is Salt and Pepper Café, owned by husband and wife team, Stu and Evania Wimms.

Stu serves an all-day breakfast and lunch menu using the best local produce — and Horowhenua seems to feed a lot of the country — and, of course, including Bennik's eggs. There's cabinet food available with a broad offering of baked classics, including cakes the size of small car tyres. If black pudding is a draw, definitely try the black pudding stack. The small-good is one of the few things that isn't local — it's from Petone — but “people love it, and we'll never change it”, says Stu. Very popular with shoppers, daytrippers and travelers, bookings are strongly advised. 4 Buller Road, Ōhau. (06) 368 7270, on Facebook.
