TASMAN BAY
Saltwater is in Nelson's DNA — so, not surprisingly, it is home to several great water-related getaways. Rent a kayak and paddle to Haulashore Island for a view of the more luxurious homes the city has to offer, or take the ferry to the Boulder Bank, which stretches 13km along Tasman Bay. The Boulder Bank is an excellent spot for a picnic or a barbecue before a hike towards the Boulder Bank Lighthouse, erected in 1862. (A key to the structure can be procured from Port Nelson on Haven Road.) Abel Tasman Sailing Charters (275 Wakefield Quay. sailingadventures.co.nz) offers longer cruises of the bay, and some further afield for an overnight adventure in the nearby national park.
