ACTIVITIES & OUTINGS

In the past few years, after luring a future-focused experience manager away from Auckland, the Nelson Provincial Museum has undergone a reinvigoration. It has long been filled with local treasures, including Māori taonga, ceramics, coins and textiles from colonial times. But although it is the oldest museum in the country, it is increasingly creating dynamic exhibitions of its own. The Our Moon show, for example, featured everything from a LED-infused pathway that mades visitors feel like they were floating through space, to a scale inflatable and illuminated moon that hung from the ceiling. That was the brainchild of Nils Pokel, formerly the digital-experience manager at the Auckland War Memorial Museum. “We want to make this place shine, which is more than just being the kaitiaki of old, dusty things,” he says. “While that's a central function of what we do, I'm interested in making the museum more relevant and contemporary. We want a destination that instils a sense of pride and wow in this place.” Corner of Trafalgar and Hardy Streets. (03) 548 9588, nelsonmuseum.co.nz
