This ambling stretch of SH1 cuts through two districts which — at least politically — share the northern part of Canterbury. The coast-hugging part of the Hurunui district, 45km north of Christchurch, is a well-worn path for both motorists and those seeking to sip a pinot noir in the Waipara Valley, one of the fastest-growing wine regions in Aotearoa. To the north is Kaikōura, the maritime town that sits between snow-capped peaks and a plunging continental shelf. As a gateway to Blenheim and once part of Marlborough, many Marlborough residents still think of Kaikōura as their own
