ACTIVITIES & OUTINGS

The word breathtaking is often overused when describing New Zealand's great outdoors but it applies absolutely when it comes to the Kaikōura Golf Course, a place where views of ocean and mountains can be captured in one sweeping glance. Situated alongside SH1, a five-minute drive from the township, the road is all that separates the 18-hole golf course from the shoreline. Although the club's origins date back to 1911, the course has been at its current location since 1935. It began as a 9-hole course, further holes being added over the next 20 years, with the full complement of 18 reached in 1963. It is easy walking, with the terrain relatively flat. There is one hill, the site of the 18th tee, from which the nearby sea is visible, and visitors will also enjoy views of the ocean from the back holes. The main hazard is a watery one, a pond on the 13th. The same pool of water can also cause problems should one hit an errant shot on the par-4 12th, the course's signature — and toughest — hole: OB (out of bounds) on the right, hazard to the left. Although many trees dot the course, the well-maintained fairways are generously wide. However, it's important to be precise around the greens, which are small and contoured. It is not long by modern standards, just over 5km, but it offers a good challenge to golfers of all levels. The clubhouse is open 5 days a week and it's a great place to enjoy a refreshing drink and hearty snack following a round. On the days it is unattended, visitors are requested to place their green fees in an honesty box near the clubhouse entrance or pay online. Clubs, including those for left-handed players, trundlers and golf carts are available for hire. Green fees: $25 (NZ affiliated), $35 (non-affiliated). 274 SH1, Kaikōura.
