Kumiko's guest house

It's no accident that a Japanese-inspired cottage sits adjacent to one of the best vineyards in Waipara. Russell Black, the original owner, was a pioneer of the growing wine region. He and his wife Kumiko planted the original Black Estate vineyard in the 1990s; the guest house, located next door to the award-winning winery, was Russell's gift to his wife. And what a gift it was. The spacious three-bedroom property pays homage to traditional Japanese interiors, with a sunken dining room, sliding screens, an internal courtyard and Zen garden. It's a find-inner-peace kind of place and an excellent choice for those keen to cycle the nearby vineyard trail. Guests have access to the entire house which includes a full kitchen, a billiards room and a countryside-facing lounge. Suitable for couples or groups of up to six people.
