Somewhere special to eat

A French pastry whizz called Amelie

(pictured) has caused waistline issues among some of the Tekapo regulars. She fills the cabinets at The Greedy Cow with so many artful morsels that repeat visits have become necessary. Locals Kevin and Daphne come here daily and admit to regular pastry transgressions: “Amelie makes the most amazing pastries. We've tasted quite a few because let's face it; no one could just try one.” Her many-layered and intricate sweet wares have helped at least one local Frenchman ward off culinary homesickness. Says Adrien: “Best French pastries I've had in New Zealand. Since Amelie arrived, I don't miss home anymore. Her paris-brest [choux pastry meets praline cream] is one of the best I've had in New Zealand, France or anywhere else.” Once you've worked through the cabinet's sweet fare, there's always breakfast, lunch and coffee to be had. The Greedy Cow's avocado-edamame-mushroom-dukkah on toast makes a great prelude to an Amelie macaron. 16 Rapuwai Lane, Lake Tekapo.
