Whare Manaaki
At Whare Manaaki Māori Gallery & Workshop, next to the Te Awahou Nieuwe Stroom, see how traditional Māori artists work. There, whakairo and tā moko (master carver and tattooist) Heemi Te Peeti (Ngāti Raukawa Te Au ki te Tonga, Ngāti Rangiwewehi, Te Āti Haunui-aPāpārangi, Ngāi Tūhoe) has carving in his heritage. “It's in my blood,” he says. To share his skills with others, he's created a studio and gallery showcasing his and other artists' talents, as well as making authentic traditional Māori art available for sale. Visitors are welcome to come and watch these talented artists work.
