What is MPI?
The Ministry for Primary Industries is the government agency responsible for animal welfare. It works to help farmers and lifestyle blockers understand their responsibilities.
“We’re here to help, and part of that is making information more easily available for lifestyle block owners who keep livestock, especially those who are new to owning a lifestyle block,” says Penny Timmer-Arends. “This will help people better prepare their property and themselves for the challenges of caring for animals, including the need for plans and budgets.”
MPI produces animal welfare codes, outlining people’s legal obligations and minimum care standards under the Animal Welfare Act 1999. www.mpi.govt.nz/welfarecodes
