Weedbusters Not the right asparagus
FOUND: nationwide
FEATURES: Asparagus scandens is a feathery, scrambling perennial with a remarkable ability to stay green, no matter where it’s growing or what the conditions. Green, wiry stems are 2-4m long and covered in tiny leaves. Has little white flowers (September-December), followed by green to orange-red berries (October-February).
HOW TO CONTROL IT
This is a difficult weed to control as its tough, long-lived roots can re-sprout, even when out of the soil.
1. Dig out tubers. The stems will snap off if you try to pull them, so it’s best to cut the plant back, then dig out as much of the roots as possible – you may need to revisit a site several times to check for sprouts. Mulch stems, but tubers need to be bagged and sent to landfill.
2. Weed wipe: glyphosate (333ml/L), no penetrant. Total coverage not required.
3. Spray (spring-early summer only): glyphosate (20ml/L). Don’t add a penetrant when spraying against tree trunks. Spray lightly, avoiding runoff. Total coverage not required.
4. Spray in autumn and winter in frost-free areas, on healthy growth: glyphosate (10ml/L). Cut back infestations of taller plants to 30-60cm high. Carefully spray the remaining vegetation. Check and respray any missed plants within 30-60 days.
