BEEBOX

Quintin Hislop, born-and-bred in Kaikōura, opened his honey shop in the UpLift Container Mall (next to his cousin's barber shop) to support small-scale beekeepers, including his family's Mountainhoney brand. “Beekeeping is a passion. It's not just about moneymaking,” says Quintin. The Hislops are well known in the region and have been beekeeping here for three generations. Framed photographs adorn the walls of this container-turned-store, showing the land and history the Hislops have embraced for more than 50 years. The shop stocks a range of honey and honey-infused goodies such as body lotions, salves, and shower products. Similar to many other resourceful locals, Quintin runs multiple side ventures onsite, including mead tastings (see Hexagon Mead, page 127) and a wholefoods café. Enjoy a quick cuppa or soup of the day while perusing local products made with heart. 28 West End, Kaikōura. 021 127 9456, on Facebook.
